每年的7月11日为世界人口日（World Population Day）。1987年7月11日，地球人口达到50亿。为纪念这个特殊的日子，1990年联合国根据其开发计划署理事会第36届会议的建议，决定将每年7月11日定为“世界人口日”，以唤起人们对人口问题的关注。据此，1990年7月11日遂成为第一个“世界人口日”。2011年10月31日，世界人口已达到70亿。

July 11 is the world population day every year. On July 11, 1987, the earth's population reached 5 billion. In order to commemorate this special day, in 1990, the United Nations, on the recommendation of its 36th session of the Governing Council of UNDP, decided to designate 11 July of each year as "World Population Day" in order to arouse people's attention to population issues. 1987年7月11日，前南斯拉夫的一个婴儿降生，被联合国象征性地认定为是地球上第50亿个人，并宣布地球人口突破50亿大关。联合国人口活动基金会(UNFPA)倡议将这一天定为"世界50亿人口日"。1990年，联合国决定将每年的七月十一日定为“世界人口日”，以唤起人们对人口问题的关注。
